ABC has spoken out again to say that Last Man Standing was not canceled because of its politics.
The Tim Allen sitcom was dropped by the network after performing its sixth and strongest season yet. Fans of the show were particularly upset because they felt the show was canceled because of its right-leaning views. Allen is an outspoken conservative.
ABC has said again and again that they had to let the show go because there wasn’t enough space on their roster, and because there was a financial dispute with the TV studio. “Politics had absolutely nothing to do with it,” said ABC Entertainment President Channing Dungey. “We have actors on out shows who have all sorts of different political views. Tim Allen is a valuable part of the Disney ABC family and has been for a very, very long time. Last Man Standing was a show that, several years running, kind of came up to the very end in terms of the renewal, which was the same case this year.”
Fans were so affected by the cancelation of the show that many signed a petition to keep the show going. When that failed, they signed a petition to boycott ABC. There were a few chances for the show to be picked up by other networks, but ultimately they all fell through.
Allen was “stunned and blindsided by the network I called home for the last six years,” he wrote on Twitter after the announcement of the cancelation.
