The Last Man On Earth, starring Saturday Night Live veteran Will Forte in the titular role, premiered on Fox Sunday night.

The Last Man On Earth Recap

Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (21 Jump Street, The Lego Movie) are he executive producers behind Forte’s unorthodox sitcom that features him as the last man standing after a virus wipes out nearly all of Earth’s population. It’s the year 2020, two years after the purposefully vague virus, and Phil has gone from reveling in the freedom of solitude to thoughts of suicide.

With no one to see him, Phil grows a mangy beard, skips showers, wears boxer briefs 24/7 and travels the country, picking up items here and there as though it’s a massive free garage sale. When he returns to the mansion he commandeered in Tucson, Ariz., he has with him Baby Ruth’s bat, a dinosaur head and priceless pieces of artwork.

Though he’d sworn after watching Castaway that he would never resort to keeping balls for pals, he does exactly that, enlisting a number of balls as drinking buddies. He also finds amusement in turning cars into bombs, bowling with aquariums and bathing in a margarita-filled kiddie pool. His lower points include using an in-ground pool for a toilet and making out with a mannequin. At his lowest, Phil decides to get really drunk off scotch then kill himself by driving into a massive rock – that is until he sees signs of human life.

Just as he’s about to end his life of solitude, Phil sees smoke in the distance. When he approaches the campsite, he meets a woman named Carol (Kristen Schaal). Carol has handled the apocalypse far differently than Phil, and still steadfastly adhere’s to societal rules, including bathing and clothes-washing.

It doesn’t take long before Phil’s relief at finding a companion turns to dread, as the two clearly have nothing in common. Despite their differences, however, Phil doesn’t see any choice but to help her. One way he thinks he can help her, himself and society is to have sex and try to procreate. Carol pumps the breaks. She wants to help repopulate the world just as much as he does, but first, they have to get married. Phil balks, then quickly finds him self on bended knee.

Last Man on Earth airs Sundays on Fox at 9/8c.
