Jeff German, a reporter for the Las Vegas Journal-Review, was found stabbed to death outside of his home this past weekend.
The police now say they’ve arrested a suspect, who is thought to be a local politician Robert Telles, about whom German had written several critical stories.
After calling on the community to call in if they saw any sign of the suspect or his vehicle early this week, Telles arrested yesterday.
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department hasn’t officially confirmed the identity of the suspect, but they did obtain a search warrant for Telle’s home yesterday.
Telles had been serving as the Clark County Public Administrator since 2019, while German worked as a reporter in Vegas for over 30 years, with two decades writing for The Las Vegas Sun and 12 years at the Journal-Review.
German’s reporting on alleged workplace hostility and inappropriate relationships in Telles’ office likely contributed to the politician’s primary election loss in June.
Glenn Cook, an editor for the Journal Review, said on Wednesday, “We are relieved Telles is in custody and outraged that a colleague appears to have been killed for reporting on an elected official.”
Cook said that this crime was particularly egregious because “journalists can’t do the important work our communities require if they are afraid a presentation of facts could lead to violent retribution.”
Telles is first scheduled to appear in court at some point on Thursday.
