Lara Trump Withdraws As Candidate For Florida Senate Seat After Father-In-Law Donald Trump Pushed For Her Appointment

Lara Trump has withdrawn her name for consideration for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Sen. Marco Rubio just days after President-elect Donald Trump pushed Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis to appoint her to the position.

“After an incredible amount of thought, contemplation and encouragement from so many, I have decided to remove my name from consideration for the United States Senate,” Lara wrote in an X post.

Trump named Rubio his choice for secretary of state in November, leaving DeSantis to choose a successor. The Florida governor said that he would likely name his pick for the seat by early January 2025.

In recent weeks, speculation has increased that Lara is a likely choice for the position since other Republican lawmakers, such as Florida Sens. Rick Scott, Lindsey Graham, Katie Britt, and Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, have offered their support for her filling the role.

Lara declared last month that she would like to be considered for Rubio’s successor.

On Dec. 8, Lara resigned as co-chair of the Republican National Committee, a position for which Trump nominated her in February.

Last week, she also told reporters in an interview that being Florida’s next senator “is something [she] would seriously consider.”

“If I’m being completely transparent, I don’t know exactly what that would look like,” the president-elect’s daughter-in-law added. “And I certainly want to get all of the information possible if that is something that’s real for me. But yeah, I would 100% consider it.”

Last Tuesday, a source in Trump’s political orbit said that he is pushing DeSantis to name Lara as the state’s next senator.

“Trump really wants Lara to do it,” the source told the New York Post.
