Lance Armstrong Tears Up On Second Part Of Oprah Interview

The second part of Lance Armstrong's interview with Oprah Winfrey on Friday night saw the cyclist shed tears, but little of his ego.

On Thursday, the first part of Armstrong's interview with Winfrey aired, and left many wondering if he truly felt any remorse for using performance enhancing drugs throughout his career. If those same people expected the segment that aired Friday to reveal a more sorrowful man, they were probably left underwhelmed. Armstrong's rawest moment was when he tearily relayed to Winfrey the conversation he had with his 13-year-old son.

“I said, listen, there’s been a lot of questions about your dad, my career, whether I doped or did not dope, and I’ve always denied, I’ve always been ruthless and defiant about that, which is probably why you trusted me, which makes it even sicker,” said Armstrong. “I want you to know it’s true.”

Despite that moment, the second part of the interview went much the way of the first. The seven-time winner of the Tour de France seemed stuck trying to justify his actions. On Thursday, he made claims that he had reasoned his doping was acceptable because of his past struggles with cancer — and because so many other cyclists were doing it as well.

On Friday, he even suggested that USADA was unfair in banning him. “If what he’s looking for is some kind of reconstruction of his image, instead of providing entertainment with Oprah Winfrey, he’s got a long way to go,” WADA founding chairman Richard Pound told The New York Times.

The disgraced cyclist admitted that he knows that gaining back the trust and support of his disappointed fans and contemporaries will be an uphill battle, and vowed to do everything in his power to regain what he lost – even though it might be a fruitless endeavor. Yet, in all of the moments of his informal confession there were scant few that showed Armstrong in a positive light. “In a way, I just assumed we would get to that point,” he said of his sponsors abandoning him. “The story was getting out of control.”
