Lana Del Rey Announces New Album, Defends Herself Against Accusations Of ‘Glamorizing Abuse’

Singer and songwriter Lana Del Rey took to Instagram on Thursday to announce her new album. She also used her post to defend herself and fire back at critics who have accused her of “glamorizing abuse” in her music.

Del Rey confirmed that her upcoming album will be released on September 5.

In her lengthy post, Del Rey addressed the double standards in the music industry. The singer has been criticized for her theme of tragic romance that spans many of her songs.

“Now that Doja Cat, Ariana, Camila, Cardi B, Kehlani and Nicki Minaj and Beyoncé have had number ones with songs about being sexy, wearing no clothes, f—king, cheating etc — can I please go back to singing about being embodied, feeling beautiful by being in love even if the relationship is not perfect, or dancing for money — or whatever I want — without being crucified or saying that I’m glamorizing abuse??????” Del Rey’s post began.

The singer fired back at her critics who have said Del Rey’s music has “set women back hundreds of years.”

“With all of the topics women are finally allowed to explore I just want to say over the last ten years I think it’s pathetic that my minor lyrical exploration detailing my sometimes submissive or passive roles in my relationships has often made people say I’ve set women back hundreds of years,” Del Rey wrote.

Del Rey ended her note saying that her seventh album and her upcoming poetry books published by Simon and Schuster, will continue to feature the realities of the relationships she has been through, no matter if she is deemed “literally hysterical.”
