LAKE MEAD NATIONAL RECREATION AREA, NEVADA - JULY 01: A sunken World War II-Era Higgins landing craft that used to be nearly 200 feet underwater is being revealed near the Lake Mead Marina as the waterline continues to lower on July 01, 2022 in the Lake Mead National Recreation Area, Nevada. The water level at Lake Mead is at its lowest since being filled in 1937 after the construction of the Hoover Dam as a result of a climate change-fueled megadrought coupled with increased water demands in the Southwestern United States. In the latest update from Lake Mead, a U.S. reservoir that has been rapidly lowering in water levels due to climate change, the parks service has discovered an old ship from World War II times that was once very difficult to reach.
According to the National Parks Service, the ship is a sunken Higgins boat that at one point was almost 200 feet underwater. Rangers had visited the vessel in a 2006 diving mission, removing the engine and modifying the body of the ship to be more open for divers, but now it’s visible to any non-diver checking the reservoir out.
The lake’s Recreation Center reports that its water levels have dropped 160 feet over the past decades due to “unprecedented” rising temperatures. Several states rely on this reservoir for their drinking water supply, and due to its current condition, the lake is only working at 35% of its possible capacity.
Other shocking things to appear in Lake Mead include several dead bodies and other old boats from different times of history.
