Lady Gaga’s New Album ‘Joanne’ Supports Black Lives Matter With Single “Angel Down”

Lady Gaga wrote a song about Trayvon Martin in her newest album, Joanne, coming out today as her fifth studio album. Martin is the 17 year old whose death started the Black Lives Matter movement.

Gaga told Beats 1, “I was overwhelmed by the fact that people just stood around and didn’t do anything about it, and that the justice system continues to, over and over again, not seek justice for these families.”

The song, “Angel Down,” features the following lyrics: “Doesn’t everyone belong in the arms of the sacred/ Why do we pretend we’re wrong has our young courage faded/ Shots were fired down the street by the church where we used to meet/ Angel down, angel down, why do people just stand around?”

Gaga is concerned with how her friends who are African American are anxious and uncertain to simply to drive around.

“They tell me they drive in their cars, and if they hear a siren, there is a paranoia that runs through their body,” she continued. “This is something that I care about. This is something that has to stop, something that we all need to heal from.”
