Lady Gaga escorted Tony Bennett offstage at his final public concert in an emotional sendoff.
The two singers could not be more different, at least so they appear. Gaga is known for unique and eccentric pop music, while Bennett is a more old-fashioned jazz singer. However, the two of them united in 2014 to work on the album Cheek to Cheek, and a beautiful connection grew from that collaboration. The album went on to win a Grammy.
It was followed up by another collaboration between the two singers, Love For Sale. The album was released in September. In August 2021, however, the two singers spent two nights performing at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. Gaga performed alone first, then Bennett sand by himself, and then the two of them performed together to end the show.
The performance is meant to celebrate Bennett’s 95th birthday. Since Bennett was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2016, he has largely retired. Yet he is still as talented as ever, and he proved it in this final performance with Gaga.
The show, One Last Time: An Evening With Tony Bennett And Lady Gaga, is now available to stream on Paramount+. Bennett performed songs such as Irving Berlin’s “Steppin’ Out With My Baby” and “Fly Me To The Moon.” As the show ends, Gaga joined Bennett for a performance of “Happy Birthday” and “Lady is a Tramp.” They also performed some songs from Love For Sale, which has now been nominated for Grammys for Album of the Year and Record of the Year.
Gaga thanked Bennett for his many contributions to the world of music. Then came the moment: she said that it would be an honor to escort him off the stage. As they walk away, the audience gave them a standing ovation, and Bennett waved to everyone as the band played on.
Bennett’s wife recently revealed that the singer is unaware of his Alzheimer’s disease.
