Lady Gaga has been tapped to take on the part of British singer Cilla Black in a forthcoming Dionne Warwick biopic.
Warwick announced at the Cannes Film Festival on Friday that Gaga would play her “musical nemesis” Black in Dionne, based on Warwick’s 2010 autobiography, My Life, As I See It: An Autobiography. When asked about Gaga’s casting Warwick replied, “Why not?” adding, “It was just an easy choice and she wanted to do it,” according to the U.K. Guardian.
Playing Warwick in Dionne, is original Destiny’s Child member, Letoya Luckett. “I must say, she did a couple of demos for me and blew me away, so I’m thrilled,” Warwick said. “Vocally she was right.”
In addition to Lady Gaga and Luckett, Olympia Dukakis has been cast as Warwick’s style mentor Marlene Dietrich, and Danny Glover has been cast as Warwick’s father.
Dionne will cover Warwick’s early years in the business, from 1962 to 1968, during which time she had a fierce rivalry with Black.
“She stole my music, and I was not a very happy camper about that. Over the years, we grew up and understood each other. It all got cleared away,” Warwick said, before noting that Black won’t be portrayed as the “villainess in the picture.”
Lady Gaga, while first and foremost a pop icon, has recently been wading into acting. Following parts in features Machete Kills and Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, Gaga landed a starring role on Ryan Murphy‘s American Horror Story, and won an Emmy for her performance as The Countess.
