Lady Gaga was subpoenaed to testify in Lukuasz “Dr. Luke” Gottwald‘s defamation case against singer Kesha on Saturday. Gottwald’s legal team claims that Gaga has improperly redacted much of the content of text message exchanges between the two singers.
The suit brought by Gottwald, claims that Kesha, whose real name is Kesha Sebert, defamed the record producer when she accused him of sexual misconduct, including assault and battery. Gottwald has denied all charges. Gaga became involved when it was revealed that Sebert exchanged texts with the “Born This Way” singer about the case and Gottwald.
“Dr. Luke’s counsel served a subpoena on Lady Gaga because she has relevant information regarding, among other things, false statements about Dr. Luke made to her by Kesha. This motion has become necessary because Dr. Luke’s counsel has not been able to obtain, despite repeated request, a deposition date from Lady Gaga,” a lawyer for Gottwald said in a statement.
Gaga, whose real name is Stefani Germanotta, had been an ardent supporter of Kesha’s in the past concerning the case and has even admitted that she too has experienced some sexual harassment within the music industry.
A representative of Gaga released a statement to The Los Angeles Times concerning the subpoena, accusing the Sony producer of manipulation.
“As Lady Gaga’s legal team will present to the court, she has provided all of the relevant information in her possession and is at most an ancillary witness in this process,” the statement began. “Dr. Luke’s legal team is attempting to manipulate the truth and draw press attention to their case by exaggerating Lady Gaga’s role and falsely accusing her of dodging reasonable requests.”
Gaga posted her support for Kesha on Instagram last year, saying, “The very reason women don’t speak up for years is the fear that no one will believe them or their abuser has threatened their life or life of their loved ones/livelihood in order to keep their victim quiet and under control. What happened to Kesha has happened to many female artists, including myself, and it will affect her for the rest of her life.”
In July, Kesha released her first original song since 2012. The singe, “Praying,” if off of her upcoming full-length album Rainbow, which will be released on Dr. Luke’s Kembosabe Records. Although Dr. Luke was removed from his top position with Kembosabe, he still remains an employee of Sony. Kesha attempted to get out of her contract with the recordbut was unsuccessful.
