‘The L Word’ Sequel Underway At Showtime
Showtime is currently working on a sequel of its hit lesbian drama The L Word.

Co-creator Ilene Chaiken will executive produce the new season with a new writer and producer with ties to the lesbian community. Sources also say that original stars Jennifer Beals, Katherine Moenig, and Leisha Hailey will executive produce and appear in the series, to be joined by a new cast.
When EW reunited Chaiken and the cast in May, they all expressed interest in returning to the show. “We talk about it all the time,” Chaiken said. “When we went off the air in 2009, I think a lot of people thought, ‘Okay, the baton is passed now, and there will be lots of shows that portray lesbian life.’ There’s really nothing. It feels like maybe it should come back.'”
The original show began airing in 2004 and went through six seasons by its end in 2009. The cult status of the show has grown since it left the air, and no new show has come in to take its niche place in the market. It seems even more important today, as a 2015 survey suggested that the percentage of young Brits who identify as exclusively heterosexual is just 46%. During the show’s run, there was one trans character, Max, who was talked about awkwardly, and there was no mention of non0binary gender, for example.
While a seventh season of the show is in the works, nothing has been confirmed. But with actresses and producers on board, it seems more than just a little likely.
