Kristen Wiig To Star in Reese Witherspoon-Produced Comedy Series

Kristen Wiig is set to star in a new Apple series produced by Reese Witherspoon.

The 10-episode, half-hour comedy marks Wiig’s first regular television role since she was last a regular on Saturday Night Live in 2012. She will also serve as an executive producer on the show, which is inspired by Curtis Sittenfeld‘s forthcoming short story collection You Think It, I’ll Say It. The creator is Colleen McGuinness, who wrote for 30 Rock in 2011 and was a supervising producer on About a Boy.

For years, Wiig has let her television career take a backseat to her film career, and has since starred, co-produced, and co-written box office hit Bridesmaids, for which she earned an Oscar nomination in the best original screenplay category. She has also appeared in The Martian, Downsizing, and Ghostbusters.

This as-of-yet untitled piece marks the third project that Witherspoon and her production company Hello Sunshine have set up at Apple. She and Jennifer Aniston will also star in a currently untitled morning show drama, and she will executive produce Are You Sleeping, a show with Octavia Spencer. Witherspoon has also been busy with the first and second seasons of acclaimed HBO series Big Little Lies, which she executive produces.

Meanwhile, Apple is working on more projects of its own sans Witherspoon. They are producing a reboot of Amazing Stories with executive producer Steven Spielberg, as well as Ron Moore‘s space race drama, the drama See by Steven Knight and Francis Lawrence, and the docuseries Home by Matt Tyrnauer and Matthew Weaver.
