Former Saturday Night Live star Kristen Wiig has been signed on as the newest cast member of the Wonder Woman sequel.
The movie is set to release towards the end of 2019, but production will be starting soon. There are not many details out about the sequel besides that Gal Gadot will continue her role as the title character. However, on March 9 director Patty Jenkins shared the news that Wiig will be joining the cast. Jenkins is excited to “finally work with one of [her] favorites.”
The director also ended with the hashtag “#Cheetah.” It is safe to say that Wiig will be taking the role of the major rival of Wonder Woman. In the comic, there are four reincarnations of Cheetah, the most popular and current Cheetah reincarnation being Barbara Ann Minerva, an archaeologist and inheritor of aristocratic wealth. The villainess has been a common arch-rival to Wonder Woman throughout the comics.
Gadot herself also commented on Wiig’s confirmation on joining the cast, she shared on Twitter that this is going to be “WONDERful”.
While many fans were originally questioning this casting choice, overall fans are extremely excited to see what Wiig will bring to the DC Universe.
Aside from Wiig’s casting, no other details about the movie has been revealed. However, fans can expect to find out more about the sequel as filming and production begins. The movie is set to be released November 1, 2019, it was originally going to be released on December 13, 2019 but moved up to avoid conflicting releases with Star Wars: Episode IX.
