The trailer for Camp X-Ray stars Kristen Stewart as a solider in the Army who is stationed at Guantanamo Bay.

'Camp X-Ray' Trailer

Camp X-Ray follows Stewart’s character Pvt. Amy Cole as she settles into her assignment at Guantanamo Bay. Before long, she develops a friendship with detainee Ali Amir, played by Peman Moaadi, and finds the ethics more ambiguous and confusing than she’d ever imagined.

“Make no mistake about it; this is a warzone. Some of these guys have been locked up in here for eight years,” a commanding officer tells Stewart. “You will refer to them as detainees. You will not call them prisoners. You can talk to them, but do not let these guys know anything about you.”

Of course, in the trailer, it becomes clear that she lets Ali Amir into her head while she learns about the circumstances that landed him in Guantanamo. In between conversations with the detainee, she’s shown out fishing on a boat and partying with her fellow officers.

Playing the U.S. Army private seems like a stretch for Stewart, who is best known for playing a teenager in love with a vampire and Snow White. The 24-year-old actress knew she’d have to work hard to make herself seem believable as a soldier. “I was so nervous when I first started working and preparing because I didn’t think that people would believe me or think that I looked tough in a uniform,” she told MTV, “that I could do that job, that I could wrangle detainees that are massive and scary.”

Stewart apparently did a commendable job, as Camp X-Ray and her performance won raves at the Sundance Film Festival.

Camp X-Ray will be in limited release starting Oct. 17.
