“You know nothing, Jon Snow,” goes the iconic refrain from Game of Thrones. It seems the line still holds true.

For many people, the ending of HBO’s hit series was not at all what they were expecting. Apparently, Kit Harington was one of them. According to Maisie Williams, the actor thought he was going to get one of the biggest moments in the final season of the show.

The scene when Williams’ character Arya Stark finally defeated the Night King by stabbing him with her dagger caused a lot of controversy. For some, it was a victorious moment that rounded out Arya’s character arc. For others, it seemed like a random twist added in for shock value, after seasons of suggesting Jon Snow would be the one to kill him.

According to Williams, Harington told her that he knew by season three that he was going to kill the Night King. “And then, he read the script, and it was Arya the whole time,” the actress explained, laughing. “I think it would’ve been too obvious. I’m glad that it was Arya, honestly. I think I had the best storyline of the final season.”

Contentious debates over the scene picked up when Harington talked about being “pissed” he ultimately didn’t end up getting the scene in a behind-the-scenes interview during the final season.

Williams, meanwhile, told James Corden on The Late Late Show that she’s simply moved on and erased the scene and subsequent controversies from her mind.
