Prince Andrew, the Duke of York, reportedly faces the prospect of eviction from his Royal Lodge mansion, owned by the monarch’s estate, as he struggles to keep up with the $503,000 annual upkeep of the $37 million property.
According to royal expert Ian Pelham Turner, King Charles III, Andrew’s elder brother, is grappling with the decision to issue an eviction notice to the disgraced royal. “Prince Andrew is fighting very hard to remain a senior royal,” Pelham told Fox News. “The problem is his home is in total disrepair. I believe Charles feels that spending money on Andrew would not go down well.”
The queen reportedly asked Charles on her deathbed to look after Andrew, who was always considered her favorite son.
The property has issues such as dampness, crumbling brickwork, peeling paint and falling plaster, all of which require significant financial investment.
The prince’s financial struggles have been exacerbated by the loss of his royal duties and patronages in the wake of his controversial connection to the late American financier and convicted sex offender, Jeffrey Epstein. Andrew was stripped of his honorary military titles and barred from the title “His Royal Highness” in official settings. Many have argued that Andrew should also lose his title as the Duke of York.
Royal broadcaster and photographer Helena Chard alleged that King Charles now threatens to evict Prince Andrew and possibly move the Prince and Princess of Wales and their family into the prestigious Royal Lodge. However, the king’s reluctance to issue harsh ultimatums to his family and the late queen’s reported wish to “look after Prince Andrew” may lead to a temporary reprieve for the embattled royal.
Prince William is said to be leading the charge against his uncle within the royal family.
