King Charles has taken significant steps to cut financial ties with his brother, Prince Andrew, according to an excerpt from Robert Hardman’s updated biography Charles III: New King. New Court. The Inside Story.
The book reveals that Charles ordered the Keeper of the Privy Purse to stop Andrew’s $1.3 million (£1 million) annual personal allowance and cease funding his security. “The Duke had certainly been faring better than expected since his brother succeeded to the throne,” Hardman wrote.
The decision also ends the King’s support for Andrew’s private security at the Royal Lodge, which reportedly cost “a substantial seven-figure sum annually.” Hardman noted, “In August, it was widely reported (and not disputed) that the King was no longer prepared to renew that contract beyond the autumn of 2024.”
Andrew, who resides at the Royal Lodge, had resisted relocating to Frogmore Cottage, a smaller property offered by the King that was formerly the home of Prince Harry. Hardman wrote, “The Duke informed the monarch that, regardless of any ultimatum, he was going to stay put at Royal Lodge anyway.” This stance led to the termination of his financial support.
“In the late summer of this year, that patience ran out,” Hardman added, signaling the end of the King’s willingness to cover Andrew’s expenses.
According to sources, Andrew must now bear the costs of securing historical art, furniture and antiques at Royal Lodge. Hardman acknowledged the outcome is a “mixed blessing,” as the financial burden has shifted but “soured family relationships yet further.”
The financial fallout traces back to Andrew’s controversial 2019 Newsnight interview, which prompted him to step back from public duties and led to Queen Elizabeth stripping him of his military titles amid legal battles with Virginia Giuffre.
His reluctance to accept the situation has reportedly prolonged tensions, with a source telling The Times, “He’s taking longer than desirable to recognize the reality of the situation.”
Andrew lives at Royal Lodge with his ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson, who has been reintegrated into the royal family after a long absence.
