WEST HOLLYWOOD, CA - MAY 10: Television personality Kim Kardashian arrives at Kim Kardashian & Midori Melon Liqueur launches The Midori Trunk Shows at Trousdale on May 10, 2011 in West Hollywood, California.
Kim Kardashian was chastised yet again for appropriating a piece of black culture.
She posted a video to her Snapchat story with cornrows in her hair, but what she said gave no indication that she understood the implications. “So guys, I did Bo Derek braids and I’m really into it,” Kardashian said, referring to the 1979 movie 10, in which the model ran across the beach in cornrows and a bathing suit. At the time, Derek was lauded for creating a “cross-cultural craze,” but now it is clear that use of the hairstyle was cultural appropriation.
“It’s a hairdo! That’s all it is,” Derek said in 2015 when Kylie Jenner wore it again. “No, seriously, of all the important racial and cultural issues we have right now, people are going to focus on a hairstyle? No, no. I’ll save my efforts toward important racial and cultural issues.”
Many were upset with Kardashian for proudly calling the hairstyle Bo Derek braids. “Kim Kardashian on snap talking bout her Fulani braids are ‘Bo-Derek braids,’ while she got 3 black children I CANT tonight,” one Twitter user wrote. “Kim Kardashian about to hear it from black Twitter. She’ll have them braids out by Tuesday, along with an apology saying how she didn’t mean to offend anyone,” said another.
A third chimed in to say that she is “so tired with the whole Kim Kardashian does something ignorant, black women tell her, she feigns innocence and apologizes, and repeats the whole cycle 2 months later I M T I R E D.”
Kardashian has caused upset in the past for various uses of makeup, and for accidentally wearing blackface, but claiming she was just “really tan.” She then defended artist Jeffree Star after her fans went after him for being a racist, and Kardashian eventually apologized. “I really wanted to apologize to you guys and my fans for defending a situation yesterday that I really didn’t know enough about,” she said at the time. “I just feel a bit naïve, and I do want to really apologize for me feeling like I had the right to say ‘get over it’ in a situation that involves racism and I just don’t feel like I have the right to speak on that and I really really really am sorry.”
Time will tell if Kardashian will turn around and apologize for her latest racial faux pas.
