New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch called the fatal shooting of Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, a “brazen targeted attack” at a press conference on Wednesday, Dec. 4.
According to the New York City Police Department (NYPD), the attack on Thompson occurred at around 6:40 a.m., when a masked gunman fired multiple shots from a handgun in front of the entrance to the New York Hilton Midtown on West 54th Street.
Thompson was hit in the back and a calf and was transported to Mount Sinai West Hospital (formerly known as Roosevelt Hospital), where he was pronounced dead.
Thompson was attending a conference at the hotel with UnitedHealthcare’s investors.
The suspect was seen in CCTV images “lying in wait” to attack Thompson in front of the hotel entrance, according to Tisch. No motive for the attack has been confirmed at the time of publishing.
The alleged gunman fled on foot and then on an electric Citi Bike heading uptown, according to the NYPD. The suspect was last seen in Central Park on Center Drive and is still at large.
