While the Billboards Music Awards was a night to celebrate and honor today’s biggest musical artists, many celebrities took the time to address the real issues that the country is dealing with on a daily basis.
Khalid and Shawn Mendes took the stage on to perform their new song together “Youth,” however they were not alone in the spotlight. They were accompanied by the choir from Marjory Stoneman High School in Parkland, Florida. Khalid wore a shirt that had the phrase “Protect Our Gun” with the word “Gun” crossed off and replaced with “Children.”

Kelly Clarkson also held a sober moment for all the victims of gun violence in America. While the moment was heartwarming and emotional, the first time host’s moment caused a bit of back fire when she said, “I’m so sick of moments of silence.”
Electronic duo The Chainsmokers, spoke about the importance of taking suicide seriously, following the suicide of fellow DJ Avicii. They said he, “meant so much to us and everyone in the EDM community.” They were also accompanied by singer Halsey, who said Avicii’s suicide was, “a reminder to all of us to be there and support and love all of our friends and family members who may be struggling with mental health issues.”

Luis Fonsi, singer of the hit song “Despacito” with Justin Bieber took home several awards last night. Following today’s political climate, he dedicated the song to “all [his] Latino brothers, all the immigrants, all the Dreamers out there, all of those who get made fun of when you speak with an accent (by) all of those who say, ‘Hey, speak English.”
Christina Aguilera and Demi Lovato performed their new diva anthem “Fall in Line,” in light of the #MeToo movement. The song is all about women no longer paying attention to men who tell them to “shut your mouth (and) stick your a-s out for me.”
