Khalid & Shawn Mendes Address Gun Violence With Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Students At Billboard Music Awards

While the Billboards Music Awards was a night to celebrate and honor today’s biggest musical artists, many celebrities took the time to address the real issues that the country is dealing with on a daily basis.

Khalid and Shawn Mendes took the stage on to perform their new song together “Youth,” however they were not alone in the spotlight. They were accompanied by the choir from Marjory Stoneman High School in Parkland, Florida. Khalid wore a shirt that had the phrase “Protect Our Gun” with the word “Gun” crossed off and replaced with “Children.”

They said he, “meant so much to us and everyone in the EDM community.” They were also accompanied by singer Halsey, who said Avicii’s suicide was, “a reminder to all of us to be there and support and love all of our friends and family members who may be struggling with mental health issues.”

Following today’s political climate, he dedicated the song to “all [his] Latino brothers, all the immigrants, all the Dreamers out there, all of those who get made fun of when you speak with an accent (by) all of those who say, ‘Hey, speak English.”
