‘Key & Peele’ To End Its Comedy Central Series After Current Season

After four successful seasons, the Emmy-award nominated Comedy Central series, Key & Peele, will end after its current fifth season. Co-creator of the show, Keegan-Michael Key said that it’s time for him and Jordan Peele to “explore other things, together and apart.”

LAST SEASON OF ‘KEY & PEELE’

“This is our final season – and it’s not because of Comedy Central, it’s us,” said Key in an interview with TheWrap. “It was just time for us to explore other things, together and apart. I compare it to Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor. We might make a movie and then do our own thing for three years and then come back and do another movie.”

“I’m thinking we could do that every three years – take a year, go bang out a movie. That’s the plan right now,” he added.

Key & Peele first aired on January of 2012, but Key and Peele have been working with each other since 2003 during six seasons of MadTV. Key & Peele spawned many viral videos, beginning with Luther,  Barack Obama‘s “anger translator,” which has over 13 million views on YouTube.

The current fifth season aired on July 8, and all of its episode have already been filmed, Key said. The show received a Peabody Award for Comedy Central in 2013, with a citation that read, “They tackle racially charged issues and ideas like no one else on television… They break new ground even as they lay claim to all of comedy’s traditions.” This year, the show has been nominated for seven Primetime Emmy Awards for categories such as “outstanding makeup for a multi-camera series or special,” “outstanding original music and lyrics,” “outstanding writing for a variety series,” and “outstanding supporting actor in a comedy series.”

The 67th Primetime Emmy Awards will air on Sept. 20.
