Kevin Ware, University of Louisville basketball player, broke his right leg in two places during his squad’s elite-eight game against the Duke Blue Devils on Sunday.
Ware, 20, had leapt up to block a three-point shot, landing awkwardly on his right leg and causing it to buckle on impact with the court right in front of his team’s bench. After trainers covered the gruesome injury with towels and moved Ware onto a stretcher, he was wheeled out of the stadium to a standing ovation of support.
From the stadium, Ware, was taken to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis where he would undergo surgery. The 6-foot-2 sophomore guard’s leg, which was broken in two places, was reset and fitted with a rod that was inserted into his tibia, according to school officials. Ware will stay in Indianapolis until Tuesday, reported ESPN.
Louisville head coach Rick Pitino lavished praise on his brave injured player in post-game interviews. “The bone’s 6 inches out of his leg and all he’s yelling is, ‘Win the game, win the game,’ ” Pitino told CBS. “I’ve not seen that in my life.… Pretty special young man.” Pitino also encouragingly stated that after a year of recovery, Ware will come back better than ever.
The Louisville Cardinals, inspired by their teammate, went on to beat basketball powerhouse Duke 85-63. They will face the 9th seeded Wichita State in the Final Four next Saturday.
