Kesha performed her single “Praying” dressed all in white in solidarity with the #MeToo and Time’s Up movements.
The artist has been embroiled in a legal battle that stemmed from a sexual assault story. Kesha claimed that her producer, Dr. Luke, sexually, verbally and emotionally abused her, and she wanted to terminate her contract with him. A New York judge refused to allow it. She had been stuck in a loop where she couldn’t create music without Dr. Luke until he was fired from Sony and Kemosabe. Since then, Kesha was able to produce her first album in five years, Rainbows.
It was appropriate for Kesha to sing her single “Praying” at the Grammys, which has become an anthem for the #MeToo movement. Clad all in white with white roses, Kesha performed the song with Camila Cabello, Cyndi Lauper, Julie Michaels, Bebe Rexha and Andra Day behind her.
“You brought the flames and you put me through hell / I had to learn how to fight for myself,” is one powerful lyric from the song that the women sang together. Kesha decided to change “No more monsters / I can breathe again,” to a specific “No more monster.” Kesha was visibly moved by the power of the performance, and tears could be seen on her face as she sang.
The song was a moment of solidarity for women. Only one woman, Alessia Cara, won one of the nine major awards, with best new artist. Kesha was nominated in the best pop vocal category alongside Lady Gaga, Kelly Clarkson and Pink, but Ed Sheeran won out.
“Praying” struck a chord with many viewers, including LaToya Jackson, who wrote on Twitter, “What a statement! #Kesha had me crying.” After her performance, Kesha also wrote a brief message on the social media site. “‘after everything you’ve done I can thank you for how strong I have become’ thank you to the @RecordingAcad, the women on stage with me tonight, and everyone who has supported me through this whole journey.”
