Kesha Issues Statement About Dr. Luke After Injunction Is Rejected

Kesha, whose real name is Kesha Rose Serbert, has delivered her first public statement since her injunction against Dr. Luke, real name Lukasz Gottwald, was denied. On Tuesday, she thanked her fans, writing on her Instagram, “I am beyond words in gratitude. Thank you is not enough but it is all I have. A million times over and forever thank you.” She also promised a longer statement was coming. The post gained 62,000 likes and 5,500 comments in the first three hours after posting.

After the injunction ruling, the internet exploded in outcry with thousands of fans (and non-fans) and dozens of celebrities, even those who have worked with Dr. Luke, vocalizing, mostly on Twitter, their support for Kesha.

Taylor Swift even donated $250,000 to Kesha’s cause (although not all of Kesha’s supporters were a fan of this move). Music Producers, like Zedd, have stepped up, offering to record free music with her.

Lena Dunham wrote an essay on the website Lenny Letter called “Why Kesha’s Case is About More Than Kesha.” Dunham uses an analogy to describe the problematic outcome of the case saying: “Imagine someone really hurt you, physically and emotionally. Scared you and abused you, threatened your family. The judge says that you don’t have to see them again, BUT they still own your house. So they can decide when to turn the heat on and off, whether they’ll pay the telephone bill or fix the roof when it leaks. After all you’ve been through, do you feel safe living in that house?”

The injunction denied Kesha’s request to record music outside of her contract with Dr. Luke, despite alleged emotional and sexual abuse. Gottwald has issued a statement declaring that Kesha’s denied injunction still means she is free because although she has to continue to record with Sony Music, she is not required to record with Dr. Luke. The statement also continued to claim that Kesha’s case is unsubstantiated and that the pop sensation is motivated by financial goals.

“Any claim that she isn’t ‘free’ is a myth,” said the statement. “Kesha’s allegations of purported abuse were unconvincing and she had no basis to void record contracts and copyrights.” The statement also went on to say, “The goal of Kesha’s counsel throughout has been to obtain a more lucrative contract through a shameless campaign of outrageous claims they will never stand behind in a court of law.” The statement continues that Kesha is submitting Dr. Luke to “trial by Twitter” and that she is trying to “ruin his reputation for financial gain while failing to support [her] claims.”

Gottwald has also taken to Twitter to defend himself, denying allegations.
