Kermit the Frog has been voiced by Steve Whitmire for the last 27 years, and is being replaced by Matt Vogel.

MUPPETS NEWS: KERMIT THE FROG GETTING NEW VOICE

Whitmire, 57, provided his voice to the talking frog since 1990, after Muppets creator Jim Henson died. He has worked on the Muppets since 1978, and supplied the voice for Ernie, of Bert and Ernie, as well. No reason has been given for his sudden exit.

Vogel, who previously voiced Kermit imitator Constantine in 2014’s Muppets Most Wanted, will first be heard as the frog on a “Muppets Thought of the Week” video next week. Vogel joined Sesame Street in 1996.

In addition to playing Kermit, Whitmire has also portrayed characters on Fraggle Rock and appeared in films Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal. He was chosen specifically to take over the voice of Kermit by Brian Henson, Jim’s son.
