MTV’s Video Music Awards aired last night, and Kendrick Lamar was the night’s big winner. He took home six awards for his single “HUMBLE.” including Video of the Year.
Ed Sheeran won Artist of the Year, while Khalid won Best New Artist. Fifth Harmony and Gucci Mane won Best Pop, Lamar won Best Hip Hop, Zedd and Alessia Cara won Best Dance, and Twenty One Pilots won Best Rock.
The night, however, featured much more than just the awards. The evening was hosted by Katy Perry, who is on a lot of people’s s–t lists at this point. Her opening was awkward, and her attempts at humor fell flat. Taylor Swift, however, debuted the music video for her latest single, “Look What You Made Me Do.” The singer didn’t appear in person at the awards, but still managed to get praise for the event.
Fifth Harmony gave a killer performance for their song, and shaded their former member Camila Cabello by starting with five members and having the shodow member thrown off stage before they began. Julia Michaels not only lost for Best New Artist, but then gave a bad performance of “Issues.”
And aside from the musical performances and faux pas, the VMAs became overtly political, with both good and bad results. They renamed the “Moonman” trophy the “Moon Person” trophy, and made all categories gender neutral. MTV also reestablished the Best Video with a Social Message award, but changed it to the Best Fight Against the System Award, and everyone who was nominated won. These actions seem good on the surface, but may have just been used to check a box at the MTV offices.
In addition, they brought out the mother of Heather Heyer, the activist who was killed in the Charlottesville tragedy, and a descendent of Robert E. Lee to denounce racism and bigotry. While certainly moving and important, the speech was a little out of place, especially when she took the time to congratulate Demi Lovato “on an epic performance.”
Overall, the show didn’t have the sparkle that it has in years past, and seemed to be more akin to the Teen Choice Awards than anything else.
