Kendrick Lamar has everybody talking after his controversial verse on Big Sean’s "Control (HOF)" took over social media when the song premiered Monday night.
‘Control (HOF),’ also featuring Jay Electronica, was supposed to be a track off Big Sean’s upcoming album Hall of Fame, but it didn’t make it on the album due to licensing conflicts. Big Sean teased fans about the song on twitter, writing that "Control" was ‘Straight rap’
In the song, Lamar calls out pretty much every single rapper in the business, including Big Sean himself:
“I heard the barbershops be in great debates all the time
Bout who’s the best MC? Kendrick, Jigga and Nas
Eminem, Andre 3000, the rest of y’all
New n****s just new n****s, don’t get involved
I’m usually homeboys with the same n****s I’m rhymin’ wit
But this is hip hop and then n****s should know what time it is
And that goes for Jermaine Cole, Big KRIT, Wale
Pusha T, Meek Millz, A$AP Rocky, Drake
Big Sean, Jay Electron’, Tyler, Mac Miller
I got love for you all but I’m tryna murder you n****s”

Twitter exploded, with the song and the three artists behind it quickly becoming trending topics on Twitter. Many are heralding Lamar’s verse as a historic shift in hip-hop. Russell Simmons called it an ‘instant classic.’
Most of the rappers mentioned by name on the record have not commented, but the majority of the hip-hop community is calling Lamar’s verse a call for friendly competition, not celebrity feuds. One rapper who did respond was Mac Miller, who tweeted, “If I can’t do no more nouns or verbs ima start comin with the wildest adjective bars that anyone has ever heard.”
Lamar isn’t only gaining publicity for his incredible challenge to successful rappers. He is also gaining quite a lot of criticism from fans for crowning himself “the king of New York” in the verse – ‘King of NY’ is currently trending on Twitter in the U.S. As many on Twitter are quick to point out, Lamar himself hails from California.
Lamar’s self-proclaimed title has opened up an amusing publicity opportunity for HBO’s Boardwalk Empire, who tweeted about the battle for the supposed title of ‘King of NY’ to promote the show’s new season premiering in September.
Big Sean’s Hall of Fame will be released August 27.
