Kelly Clarkson covered Taylor Swift’s “Shake it Off” at a recent concert, singing her own gospel-inspired version of the hit pop song.
Clarkson performed the first single off Swift’s new 1989 album at her Oct. 25 show in Buffalo, N.Y., and, lucky for us, a few audience members recorded the performance and posted it on YouTube. The performance quickly went viral as one of the best covers of “Shake it Off,” and one of the videos has over 2 million hits on YouTube.
In the video, Clarkson introduces the song, saying, “This is a chart song. This is a soulful song. This is one of my favorite songs out right now.”
Clarkson, who frequently performs covers on tour, took her time, slowing down the first verse of the song before picking it up in the chorus. Clarkson finished her performance with a sweet message to Swift, telling the audience, “Seriously, everybody gives Taylor Swift a hard time, but she can write a hook. I’m just sayin’.”
Swift gushed over the performance on Twitter, writing, “Watching Kelly Clarkson SLAY “Shake it Off” is an excellent way to celebrate 26 HOURS TIL 1989!”
Clarkson responded to the tweet, telling Swift how much she loved the song and congratulating her on her new album.
