Kelly Clarkson’s debut as an Olympic commentator alongside NFL Hall of Famer Peyton Manning and NBC sports commentator Mike Tirico received poor reviews. The trio co-hosted NBC’s studio coverage of the opening ceremony in Paris, which featured a boat parade and was marred by rain.
Despite NBC’s reputation for high-quality Olympic coverage, viewers took to social media to express their disappointment with the commentary, some calling it “childish” and “vapid.” Many felt the performance, particularly Clarkson’s, fell far short of expectations. This marked Clarkson’s first foray into Olympics broadcasting, a notable shift from her usual singing career and hosting duties.
“Kelly Clarkson has been the worst part of this #OpeningCeremony by a mile,” wrote one fan. “Let’s never do this again, NBC.”
The criticisms of the Paris Olympics coverage weren’t solely directed at Clarkson—Manning also received negative feedback.
A standout moment for many was Clarkson’s heartfelt reaction to Canadian singer Celine Dion’s performance. Dion, making her first live appearance in five years, has been battling Stiff Person Syndrome, a rare neurological disorder. Clarkson was visibly moved and shed tears as she praised Dion’s resilience and vocal prowess.
“I actually can’t talk. That was really beautiful. If people don’t know her story… it’s just incredible what she’s overcome. To have that moment — she’s a vocal athlete,” Clarkson remarked during the broadcast. She continued her emotional commentary, highlighting Dion’s strength and calling her a “gold winner for vocal athletes.”
