Keira Knightley shocked the world on Tuesday when she displayed her tiny waist while attending the Chanel fashion show at Paris Fashion Week.
Knightley is the face of the Chanel fragrance Coco Mademoiselle, and attended the fashion show dressed head-to-toe in the famed designer. The focal point of her ensemble was an optical illusion dress that made her waist look even smaller than usual, a shocking visual considering Knightley’s already small frame.
The dress is comprised of a full skirt and a boxy crop top with a skintight, black clinched waist. The wide-set skirt and structured top, which hangs straight at her waist and does not mold to her body at all, makes Knightly appear more broad than she really is, making her waist stand out even more.
Knightley attended the show with her husband, James Righton and fellow celebrity attendee, Rihanna, wore a variation on the optical illusion dress, though hers was uniformly lilac, lessening the startling optical effect slightly.
No doubt the photos of her ensemble will spark more rumors that Knightley is unhealthily skinny. Knightley has been surrounded by rumors that she suffers from anorexia ever since she reached fame with roles in Bend It Like Beckham (2002) and Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003).
In 2007, Knightly spoke about how devastated she felt when she saw that magazines were labeling her as anorexic after shocking photos surfaced from the set of Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End.
“It appeared that I were promoting something when I absolutely was not. I am thin because that’s what I am, and I was thinner at that point because of the work I do. Nothing else,” Knightley explained.
Earlier that same year, Knightly sued the Daily Mail for running a photo of her in a bikini with a story about an 11-year-old girl who died of anorexia, saying it suggested that she was promoting the disease.
Furthermore, Knightley has been open about her family history of anorexia, saying that both her grandmother and great grandmother struggled with the eating disorder and that she takes the issue very seriously.
“I’ve got a lot of experience with anorexia – my grandmother and great grandmother suffered from it, and I have a lot of friends at school who suffered from it. I know it’s not something to be taken lightly and I don’t,” Knightley said at the 2006 premiere of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest.
Finally, in a 2012 interview with Allure, Knightley admitted that all the talk about her body and weight made her feel insecure, saying, “The anorexic stuff – all that – it’s always going to have an impact, so I think it did hit pretty hard. Because you go, oh, maybe that’s right! I knew I wasn’t anorexic, but maybe my body is somehow not right. You kind of just want to hide it all.”
