The first part of Keeping Up With the Kardashians: About Bruce aired Sunday night, showing how Bruce Jenner’s daughters took the news that he had decided to transition to physically become the woman he’s always felt like inside.
During the Keeping Up With the Kardashians special, the biggest reveal was that Bruce plans on saying goodbye to “Bruce” in the very near future. When Khloe Kardashian asks if the full physical transformation is coming soon, he tells her. “That’s quite possible, yeah. Probably in the spring (is when Bruce will be gone).”
While the revelation that the Olympic athlete plans to live out in the open as the woman he’s long felt like within is a big one, the first part of About Bruce focused more on the emotional family dynamics at play after he comes out to daughters Khloe, Kim Kardashian, Kourtney Kardashian, Kendall Jenner and Kylie Jenner.
As Bruce noted in his 20/20 interview with Diane Sawyer, Khloe had the most difficult time with the news. “My sisters and I knew from whenever we found out years ago that Bruce was a cross dresser,” Khloe, who took issue with Bruce’s secrecy, says at one point. “But we were never told that he was going to fully transition and become a woman.”
Taking on a leadership role among the sister’s, Kim set up a get together with Bruce so that they could all be on the same page with everything that he’s going through. When Khloe accuses him of lying, he explains that it’s been difficult to be forthcoming because he’s been lying about this since he was a child. He also tells them that the last thing he’s ever wanted to do was to hurt any of them.
“The greatest thing in my life I’ve ever done is raise my children. It’s my greatest accomplishment. I got everybody out of the nest, everybody’s doing great. I’ve got to deal with myself. The last thing in the world I want to do is hurt anyone of you,” Bruce said. “Maybe if I’m not honest, it’s because I’m afraid to talk to you about this subject because I know it hurts. I understand that. Am I doing it right, Khloe? You can never do this right. There is no right way to do this.”
Kendall, after the initial shock, admitted that she, like her other sisters, had seen signs of Bruce’s struggle with gender identity growing up, but didn’t know exactly what she was witnessing.
“We would find things like makeup or like lipstick and we thought he was having an affair,” the model said. “We didn’t want our family to be broken up so we wouldn’t tell anybody.”
In a lighter part of the episode, when Kim goes to visit Bruce, he shows off his immaculate pedicure. She’s stunned and impressed to learn that he did it himself. Khloe also has a more enjoyable moment with her dad, bringing him over some new duds, including a pair of red heels.
The second part of Keeping Up With the Kardashians will air Monday on E! at 9/8c.
