On-air sports journalist Kayla Nicole has taken to Instagram to share an open letter to black women following some backlash from Swifties.
Since news broke out about Taylor Swift‘s potential romance with Travis Kelce, Nicole has received numerous comments from the pop star’s fanbase. She called out the Swifties, saying she has received “backlash and embarrassment” just because Swift is now dating Kelce, her ex-boyfriend.
Nicole isn’t the only one of Kelce’s ex-girlfriends to receive hate from Swift’s fanbase.
Recently, Maya Benberry has spoken up about the death threats that she has gotten from Swifties for being critical of Kelce and skeptical of his relationship with the singer.
Benberry spoke about Kelce allegedly cheating on her and called him a narcissist.
Swifties then started to make aggressive and angry comments towards Benberry, accusing her of trying to destroy the relationship. Benberry responded by saying she doesn’t “feel any type of way” of Swift dating her ex-boyfriend.
In an interview with Inside Edition, Benberry was surprised that the fanbase is “aggressive, very negative, very hypocritical,” which contrasts Swift, who appears to be “positive and really nice.”
Nicole approached the issue differently, focusing on uplifting and uniting black women, to which she has dedicated her platform.
In her letter, Nicole talked about her experiences as a black woman. She alluded to the hate she has been receiving from the Swifties. “They’ll say you deserve the backlash and embarrassment because of your Blackness, you should’ve known better,” she said.
Nicole advised her audience not to participate in this “one-sided journey” and to instead “preserve” their hearts.
She criticizes people for calling black women “too much, too provocative, too boisterous, too outspoken,” yet also telling them how they’re not enough.
Nicole reminded black women that there is power in silence and advised them never to forget the value they have and bring.
