Kayla Brianna appears on TBS reality TV series Meet the Smiths with her family, which includes her famous father, former NBA star and Inside the NBA analyst Kenny Smith.
Meet the Smiths premiered back in April, making it one of the latest family-oriented reality TV series joining the ranks of Keeping Up with the Kardashians. While Kim, Khloe and Kourtney Kardashian are more than used to going about their daily lives with a camera pointing in their direction, it took some getting used to for Kayla.
“At first it was super awkward because we’d be at dinner and they’d be like, “Ok, act natural,” and you have three cameras with you at the other end,” Kayla told uInterview in an exclusive interview. “But I feel like once we finally got used to them being there we would just be ourselves, you know and act natural… You can only be private so much, but I feel like when you embrace who you are and your mistakes people relate to that.”
One of the more difficult parts of having her day-to-day private life filmed was navigating her relationship with her dad in regards to her dating life. After recounting an instance when Smith stalked her Instagram page to find out who she was seeing, she explained, “He’s so over the top, just how he is on his show, Inside the NBA. He’s just like that at home, except the viewers think it’s cool, but we just think he’s dad and embarrassing.”
“I tend to be careful who I bring around the house,” Kayla added. “I just make sure 100 percent I know that they’ll be around for awhile before I introduce them to my parents.
Aside from the TV show, Kayla also has a budding music career. The up-and-coming R&B singer first entered the music scene in 2012 when she was just 17-years-old. Now 22, Kayla, who draws inspiration from the likes of Brandy and Aaliyah, feels like she’s found her sound, which can be heard on her new track “Honest” that she wrote with Eric Bellinger.
“I would say that my sound resembles a modern Brandy. I feel like we both have a lot of harmonies and a lot of stacks in our vocals,” Kayla told uInterview. “She’s someone I look up to as an artist as well, and I have a very clear tone too, so [“Honest”] is just talking about what I’m going through in my relationship. It’s an R&B track but you can still bob your head to it.”
Meet the Smiths airs Fridays on TBS at 9/8c.
