Katy Perry
Katy Perry won a court battle Wednesday, making her one step closer to purchasing a convent that the nuns who once lived there don’t want sold to her.
Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Stephanie Bowick ruled Wednesday that the nuns cannot sell the property to Dana Hollister. Bowick’s ruling effectively “extinguished” the deed to sell the property to the restauranteur, according to the Los Angeles Times.
The Sisters of he Immaculate Heart of Mary had argued that the property up for grabs was theirs to sell, and that selling it to Hollister for $15.5 million was legal. However, the Los Angeles Archdiocese argued – successfully – that the church has jurisdiction in the matter, and that consequently the diocese’s sale of the property to Perry for $14.5 million cash is binding.
“We won the real property issues,” Perry’s attorney, Eric Rowen said in a statement.
Despite the victory, the Immaculate Heart of Mary nuns are not done fighting. “As far as I’m concerned, it’s still game on,” their attorney, John Scholnick, said.
The nuns have previously expressed how adamant they are about not letting Perry get her hands on the convent. “Katy Perry represents everything we don’t believe in. It would be a sin to sell to her,” Sister Catherine Rose Holzman told Billboard last year.
