Kathy Griffin No Longer Under Investigation By Secret Service After Decapitated Trump Photo

Kathy Griffin took to Twitter to confirm that she is no longer under federal investigation after the controversial photoshoot in which she held up a bloody, decapitated head which bore a likeness to President Donald Trump.

The comedian, 56, tweeted on Friday “TODAY. The @AP has to clarify. I am no longer under federal investigation. The case is closed, I have been completely exonerated. Finally”.  Posted below the tweet was a screen grab from the Associated Press that explained the situation further.

Griffin quickly apologized for the photo after its release in May, tweeting a video, in which she said: “Hey, everybody, it’s me, Kathy Griffin. I sincerely apologize. I am just now seeing the reaction to these images. I’m a comic. I crossed the line. I move the line. Then I cross it. I went way too far. The image is too disturbing. I understand how it offends people. It wasn’t funny.”

Despite her apology, Griffin received immediate backlash for the photo, including being fired from CNN’s New Year’s Eve special. The news network tweeted on May 31 that Griffin was let go from the annual show and called the images “disgusting and offensive.”

Griffin’s longtime friend and New Year’s Eve special cohost, Anderson Cooper, also publicly denounced the controversial images. Cooper tweeted “For the record, I am appalled by the photo shoot Kathy Griffin took part in. It is clearly disgusting and completely inappropriate.”

In addition to being fired from CNN, Griffin was reportedly interviewed by the Secret Service after the photos were released.  According to New York Magazine, the comedian was interviewed by the Secret Service, in-person, for over an hour.

The comedian herself hinted that she was under investigation on June 27 sharing a link to a Think Progress article calling out TMZ for their coverage of the President. Griffin tweeted, “Hey, I don’t give a F anymore. @TMZ & Harvey Levin may u NEVER b under fed investigation like I am now.”

Despite Griffin’s tweet that she is no longer under investigation, the Secret Service said they are “not at a liberty to confirm or deny if the investigation is over.” Griffin’s attorney, Lisa Bloom, also declined to comment.
