Kathy Griffin was fired from CNN on Wednesday morning after posting a photo holding prop resembling the bloody decapitated head of Donald Trump.
The tweet was met with a lot of backlash because of its outright violence, and was deleted soon after. Trump tweeted about the incident, saying what she did was inappropriate and disturbing. “Kathy Griffin should be ashamed of herself,” he wrote. “My children, especially my 11 year old son, Barron, are having a hard time with this. Sick!”
Griffin has since apologized for the photo shoot, done by celebrity photographer Tyler Shields. “I sincerely apologize, I’m just now seeing the reaction of these images. I’m a comic. I crossed the line – I move the line and then I cross it. I went way too far. The image is too disturbing. I understand how it offends people, it wasn’t funny, I get it,” she said in a video posted to Twitter. “I’ve made a lot of mistakes in my career, I will continue. I asked your forgiveness. Taking down the image, gonna ask the photographer to take down the image and I beg for your forgiveness. I went too far, I made a mistake and I was wrong.”
The day after the images were posted, Griffin was fired from CNN’s annual New Year’s Eve program, which she has co-hosted with Anderson Cooper since 2007. “It is clearly disgusting and completely inappropriate,” he wrote on Twitter.
Chelsea Clinton weighed in as well, saying, “It is never funny to joke about killing a president.” In an initial statement, Griffin said she “did not condone ANY violence… I’m merely mocking the Mocker in Chief.” That tweet has since been deleted.
