Kathy Bates will join the cast of American Horror Story’s third season, TVLine reports. Bates will play opposite of AHS vet Jessica Lange, first as Lange’s character’s best friend, and then as her enemy.

Bates is a huge addition to the already successful series. She received the Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in 1990’s Misery and has twice been nominated for Best Supporting Actress (Primary Colors, About Schmidt). She has also been nominated for ten Emmy Awards, winning for the first time last year for her guest work on Two and a Half Men.

“What we’re doing is more ambitious than what we’ve ever done,” AHS creator Ryan Murphy told Entertainment Weekly.“This one will be shot on location in three different cities in the country.”

Ryan hinted in January that he had some casting surprises up his sleeve. "I'm just now meeting with a lot of actors, so I don't want to say too much," Murphy said, according to The Hollywood Reporter. "But they're actors Jessica wants to work with — so she's sort of become a noncredited producer on season three, because she loves doing the show."

New additions aside, AHS fans can rest assured that many of their favorite actors will be back. The show utilizes a somewhat reparatory cast, with Lange, Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters and Lily Rabe having appeared in all three seasons. Additionally, Taissa Farmiga, who was in the show’s first season, will be back for the third.
