Katherine Heigl Pledges $1 Million To Help Animals

Katherine Heigl wants to save the animals. The former Grey’s Anatomy star recently pledged $1 million of her own money to help spay and neuter animals in the Los Angeles area.

The Jason Debus Heigl Foundation, founded by Heigl and her mother and named after her deceased brother, will work with the city of Los Angeles and other charitable organizations in the area to raise awareness and help fund programs that deal humanely with animal overpopulation. The initiative will be called the Compassion Revolution, and will address the more than 50,000 animals that are euthanized in Los Angeles each year. "What’s happening is not only inhumane and morally reprehensible, it’s economically irresponsible," the actress said at a press conference. "Killing is not a solution."

Heigl herself owns six dogs, and wants the people of Los Angeles to understand the basics about animal overpopulation and compassionate care. "Most people are unaware of what’s happening. We can start to change the existing paradigm," she said. –AMY LEE
