Kate Middlton's Nurse, Jacintha Saldanha, Commits Suicide After Royal Family Prank

Jacintha Saldanha was found dead Friday morning outside of King Edward VII Hospital, two days after accidentally revealing confidential information about Kate Middleton’s (pictured) pregnancy to a pair of Australian radio DJs impersonating Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Charles. The cause of death is unknown, but is suspected to be suicide, a source told the NY Daily News.

Saldhana, 46, was a nurse at King Edward VII Hospital where Middleton, who was recently revealed to be pregnant with her first child with Prince William (pictured), was seeking treatment for acute morning sickness. Mel Craig and Michael Christian, hosts of Sydney’s 2Day FM, had been hyping up their prank on the Royal Family on Twitter, and when the time came they impersonated the British Royal Family members in a manner believable enough for Saldhana, working as a receptionist the day of the prank, to put them in contact with another nurse who then updated the pranksters on Middelton’s condition.

For their part, Craig and Christian were surprised the prank worked, as they explained on their show Thursday, CNN reports. "They were the world's worst accents ever. We were sure 100 people at least before us would've tried the same thing…. We were expecting to be hung up on — we didn't even know what to say when we got through."

The hospital released the following statement: "It is with very deep sadness that we confirm the tragic death of a member of our nursing staff, Jacintha Saldanha. Jacintha has worked at the King Edward VII’s Hospital for more than four years. She was an excellent nurse and well-respected and popular with all of her colleagues. We can confirm that Jacintha was recently the victim of a hoax call to the hospital. The hospital had been supporting her throughout this difficult time."

Saldanha was married with two children.
