This weekend, Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle attended Wimbledon. Markle watched her close friend Serena Williams lose to Angelique Kerber, and was seen shedding tears at what Williams had to say in an interview following the match.
Though the tennis star said it was “obviously disappointing to lose,” she said she “can’t be disappointed.”
“To all the moms out there, I was playing out there for you today and I tried. I look forward to continuing to be back out here and do what I do best,” she said.
Later, Williams told CNN, “I just feel like to tell all the moms, like I had such a long struggle to come back and it was really difficult, and honestly I feel like if I can do it, they can do it. I’m just that person, that person, that vessel that’s saying ‘you can be whatever you want to be if you want to go back to work.”
During the interview, the camera cut to the duchesses, which caught Markle choked up.
During the event, Markle notably held her hat for the entire match. Reportedly, the Royal Box has it’s own dress code, which bars attendees from donning hats.
“Protocol — dress is smart, suits/jacket and tie, etc. Ladies are asked not to wear hats, as they tend to obscure the vision of those seated behind them,” according to the Official Wimbledon website.
Although she couldn’t wear her signature fedora, Markle looked stunning in her Ralph Lauren blue and white striped top paired with white silk Ralph Lauren pants.
