Kate Middleton fought back tears during her first major engagement with the royal family since completing chemotherapy: the Festival of Remembrance.
On Nov. 9, the Princess of Wales, 42, attended a solemn ceremony at London’s Royal Albert Hall alongside King Charles, Prince William, Princess Anne, and other members of the royal family, honoring the service of military personnel.
During a standing ovation as the heroic war veterans took to the stage, Princess Kate appeared close to tears. She attempted to control her overwhelming emotions as she pursed her lips tightly.
Following what Prince William described as a “brutal” year due to both her and King Charles’ cancer diagnoses and treatments, the evening represented Princess Kate’s deeply emotional return to public life after a prolonged absence.
On Sept. 9, Kate announced her completion of chemotherapy, six months after revealing that she was undergoing cancer treatment and subsequently stepped away from public life to focus on her health. This year’s festival held special significance, marking Kate’s first major public appearance since then.
At the event, Prince William placed his arm protectively around his wife’s back as they entered Royal Albert Hall in a rare public display of affection.
After the festival, Kate continued her royal engagements, attending the Cenotaph Service on Remembrance Sunday. From a balcony above the war memorial, she watched as King Charles and Prince William laid wreaths.
Kate’s wreath bore the message, “In memory of all those who made the ultimate sacrifice. We will remember them.”
Kate recently surprised many when she and Prince William wished estranged royal Prince Harry a happy 40th birthday.
