Kate Gosselin broke her silence about the controversy sparked on Monday when a picture of her pulling back her eyelids to look Asian was released on Twitter, writing an explanation on her official blog.
“This was a happy memory of mine. It was a happy time for me and Jon, smiling and ‘goofing off’ together. Jon and I were opening fan mail together one afternoon…and when we opened this plastic Asian dress up wig sent from a caring fan, we smiled, each taking turns posing in it and snapping photos (on my phone) of each other. Naturally, I ‘slanted’ my eyes to show him my best Asian impression, which made him smile,” Gosselin wrote on her blog.
The photo, which was posted by a mystery source on the Twitter account of @katiedeen888kat, was tweeted to the managing editor of Radar Online David Perel and quickly spread across the Internet.
Gosselin, the mother of eight biracial children and star of the reality series Jon and Kate Plus 8, insisted that the plastic hairpiece was sent to her by a fan who thought it would help her look more like her husband and children, who are part Korean.
“At that time, a common topic of our show was ‘everybody’s Asian’ – except for Mommy, so a thoughtful fan figured she’d help me look Asian too! It’s normal to talk about and even ‘exaggerate’ the feature differences between family members of a biracial family as they are noticed by curious growing children within the family,” Gosselin wrote.
In her blog post, Gosselin alleges that the photo had been stored on her private home computer and was released without her knowledge or consent.
