Karla Sofía Gascón, Oscar-Nominated Transgender Star Of ‘Emilia Pérez,’ Apologizes For Old Social Media Posts Insulting Muslims, BLM & George Floyd

The Oscar-nominated star of the film Emilia Pérez, Karla Sofia Gascón, has been criticized for old social media posts.

On Thursday evening, Gascón addressed the offensive content she has posted in the last five years.

In a deleted Sept. 2 post from 2020, Gascón shared a photo of a Muslim family alongside the caption, “Islam is marvelous, without any machismo. Women are respected, and when they are so respected they are left with a little squared hole on their faces for their eyes to be visible and their mouths, but only if she behaves. Although they dress this way for their own enjoyment. How DEEPLY DISGUSTING OF HUMANITY.”

Following the death of George Floyd in May 2020 and the ignited Black Lives Matter movement, Gascón commented online, “Let me get this straight, a guy tries to pass off a counterfeit bill after consuming methamphetamine, an idiot policeman arrives and goes too far in arresting him, killing him, ruining the lives of his family and his colleagues, and turning the guy with the bill into a martyr hero.”

She continued, “I truly believe that very few people ever cared about George Floyd, a drug addict and a hustler, but his death has served to highlight once again that there are those who still consider Black people to be monkeys without rights and those who consider the police to be murderers. All wrong.”

Gascón also shared controversial opinions about the 2021 Oscars ceremony, complaining about the influx in minority representation: “More and more the #Oscars are looking like a ceremony for independent and protest films; I didn’t know if I was watching an Afro-Korean festival, a Black Lives Matter demonstration or the 8M. Apart from that, an ugly, ugly gala. They forgot to give an award to my cousin’s short film, which is lame.”

Gascón kicked off her apology by saying, “I want to acknowledge the conversation around my past social media posts that have caused hurt.”

She continued, “As someone in a marginalized community, I know this suffering all too well, and I am deeply sorry to those I have caused pain. All my life, I have fought for a better world. I believe light will always triumph over darkness.”

Gascón made history as the first trans actress nominated for Best Actress Oscar.
