Kanye West confused fans at a surprise Yeezy show at Paris Fashion Week when he came on stage for a speech wearing a “White Lives Matter” shirt. West, who has also been going by the name Ye, wore the long-sleeved black shirt with the phrase on the back, and the face of the Pope on the front.

He also welcomed the conservative pundit Candace Owens to the show, who also wore a version of the same shirt in white. His speech apparently touched on his ex-manager Scooter Braun by saying, “You can’t manage me. This is an unmanageable situation,” and also spoke about his ex-wife Kim Kardashian being robbed in Paris about six years ago.

West has been causing online controversy pretty much consistently for the past several years, including with his endorsement of Donald Trump for President, and bizarre harassment of Kardashian and her now ex-boyfriend Pete Davidson.

In the context of his apparel business, West had even been recently feuding with the boards of Adidas and Gap, which were former partners of his with Yeezy but may be shouldered out now.

Several of West’s children with Kardashian were involved in the show, including North West. The models in the show were also dressed in other “White Lives Matter” apparel, which is likely part of his collection given how heavily it featured.

While this was likely just a stunt to get more eyes on his designer collection, it still reads as in pretty poor taste and displeased some people online. One celebrity who was attending, Jaden Smith, later tweeted that he left the event after seeing what West was wearing and wrote several posts in response to the matter including one that simply read, “Black Lives Matter.”
