Kanye West, recreating his infamous Grammy stage storming of 2009, ran up the stage when Beck was accepting the Album of the Year award. After the major music event, West explained that he felt Beyoncé was more deserving of the honor.
Beck beat out Pharrell Williams‘ Girl, Sam Smith‘s In the Lonely Hour, Ed Sheeran‘s X and Beyoncé’s self-titled album for Album of the Year at the 2015 Grammys. As the award was placed in Beck’s hand, West had left his seat and approached the musician on the stage in what some believed was an attempt at a joke from the hip-hop artist, who had pulled a similar stunt when Taylor Swift beat Beyoncé out at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards.
After the Grammys, West made it known that his stage-storming was not him exposing a sense of humor. In fact, West explained that he truly felt that Beck should have handed off his Grammy to Beyoncé. West not only criticized Beck, but the Grammys as a whole, claiming that the music awards show doesn’t honor “real artists.”
“I just know that the Grammys, if they want real artists to keep coming back, they need to stop playing with us. We ain’t gonna play with them no more,” West told sister-in-law Khloe Kardashian, who was reporting for E! News. “And Beck needs to respect artistry and he should have given his award to Beyoncé and at this point, we tired of it. Because what happens is when you keep on diminishing art and not respecting the craft and smacking people in the face after they deliver monumental feats of music, you’re disrespectful to inspiration.”
“And we as musicians have to inspire people who go to work every day. And they listen to that Beyoncé album and they feel like it takes them to another place. Then they do this whole promotional event, that, you know, they’ll run the music over somebody’s speech, the artist, because they want a commercial advertising. Like no, we not playing with them no more,” West continued to the discomfort of his wife, Kim Kardashian, who was at his side. “And by the way, I got my wife, I got my daughter, and I got my clothing line so I’m not going to do nothing to put my daughter at risk — but I am here to fight for creativity. That’s the reason why I didn’t say anything tonight. But y’all know what it meant when ‘Ye walked on the stage.”
Beck, who also won Best Rock Album Sunday night, responded to West’s shade with humility, praising his work in the industry and even agreeing that maybe Beyoncé should have taken the award.
“I was just so excited he was coming up. He deserves to be on stage as much as anybody. How many great records has he put out in the last five years right?” Beck told Us Weekly, adding of Beyonce, “I thought she was going to win. Come on, she’s Beyonce!”
Adding more praise for West, Beck continued, “I still love him and think he’s genius. I aspire to do what he does.”
