Kanye West has hired yet another lawyer in his ongoing divorce with Kim Kardashian, just a day before a hearing which will determine if Kardashian can be granted her request to be declared legally single.
West’s former attorney, Chris Melcher, confirmed on Tuesday that he and the rapper/producer are no longer working together. His new lawyer, Samantha Spector, is a powerful Beverly Hills attorney who has navigated high-profile divorces before. She has represented Amber Heard in her split with Johnny Depp, and Nicole Young while she was divorcing Dr. Dre.
Last Wednesday, Kardashian filed in court that West’s frequent social media rants against her and boyfriend Pete Davidson are causing “emotional distress,” and also characterized them as misleading the public about their “private family manners and co-parenting.”
The response from West’s team was to object Friday, saying in their court docs that Kardashian was committing “double hearsay,” with her statements. “Kim needed to offer the social media posts into evidence, and show that the posts were written by Kanye,” West’s lawyer argued. “Instead, Kim argues a point that is not in the record. The statement is inadmissible hearsay … so Kanye asks that it be stricken.”
Reading these statements makes it abundantly clear why West wipes his social media accounts after every rant, but most if not all of his statements have been archived in other fashions. It’s unclear whether West will continue this argument now that he has a new lawyer.
West and Kardashian had been separated and co-parenting with less issue for several months after she filed for divorce in February 2021. However, West’s behavior has grown increasingly more erratic recently in what many critics assume is a misguided attempt to win her back.
