Kanye West Cries & Apologizes For Saying ‘Slavery Was A Choice’ In New Radio Interview

Kanye West apologized for saying “slavery was a choice” earlier this year in a tearful interview this week with a Chicago radio station.

The 41-year-old rapper’s comments at TMZ’s newsroom in May sparked widespread criticism. West, who is known for being a fierce supporter of President Donald Trumpalso discussed his struggles with bipolar disorder in the interview with 107.5 WGCI Chicago. Around the same time West stormed TMZ’s offices, he also shared a photo on Twitter of a red “Make America Great Again” hat signed by Trump.

“I’m sorry for the one-two effect of the MAGA hat into the slave comment, and I’m sorry for people that felt let down by that moment,” said West. “And I appreciate you giving me the opportunity to talk to you about the way I was thinking and what I was going through and what led me to that and I just appreciate you guys holding on to me as a family.”

The rapper went on to more directly address his comment about 400 years of slavery: “It’s not something for me to overly intellectualize. This is something about the fact that it hurt people’s feelings and the way that I presented that piece of information,” West said.

“I could present in a way, more calm way, but I was ramped up. And I apologize. That happens when people are– I’m not blaming mental health, but I’m explaining mental health.”

West also revealed he believes the decline in his mental stability came from a falling out he had with clothing designer Don C, a friend of his.

The rapper, who released his latest album Ye in June, was left speechless by a question from Jimmy Kimmel earlier this month about Trump’s treatment of black people.

At the end of the interview, West suggested to fans that he was determined to change his behavior.
