Kanye West took the stage at Bonnaroo Friday night and was booed by the audience after interrupting his set with a rant against the press.
West was a headliner at the Tennessee music festival on Friday, and his 21-song set did not go off without a hitch. Bonnaroo attendees are not fans of West, or his bombastic performance style, and “F—k Kayne” was already graffitied throughout the festival before his arrival. Halfway through his set, West addressed the messages before ranting about the media.
“Last time I got here before I even arrived, they had ‘f—k Kanye’ on the motherf—king portapotties! But this s—t, we gonna piss on them, on their motherf—king portapotties,” West said.
During the introduction of his song “Heartless,” West repeatedly yelled about the press, inspiring a chorus of boos and causing some audience members to walk out. The rapper also claimed that the press tries to make him look crazy:
“How many of y’all give a f—k about what the press say…. Look at how they try to make me look. They try to make me look crazy. And the people that write that I don’t see them performing for 90,000 motherf—kers. They can’t even perform for their child.”
West’s mid-performance rants are nothing new, and he continued to go into monologues between songs, touching on his own ambition as well as his hopes for his fans, telling the audience, “If you’re a fan of me, you’re a fan of your motherf—king self. You can go out and do anything.”
Some Bonnaroo attendees captured bits of West’s performance and posted video on YouTube and Instagram, in which audience members are seen walking out of the show. According to EW, a noticeable chunk of the audience left West’s show to head to the Disclosure tent early, chanting “F—k Kanye!”
“I ain’t going after nobody on the radio. I’m going after Shakespeare. Walt Disney. Mozart. Henry Ford. Howard Hughes. David Stern. Elon Musk…You can only achieve as high as your dreams.”
“I am the No. 1 motherf—king rock star on the planet,” West added.
West also spurred rumors of a feud with his friend and frequent collaborator, Jay Z. West allegedly left out Jay Z’s name when he performed “Cold.” This is reportedly the second time West has written out his friend’s name during a performance, and some suggest that it is proof of anger towards Jay Z for not attending his wedding to Kim Kardashian on May 24.
Meanwhile, West’s new wife seemed to enjoy her time at the festival. She posted a photo of herself in front of the huge crowd to Instagram, writing, “Oh hey 100,000 people!”
