President Joe Biden welcomed two-time champions, Kansas City Chiefs, as they arrived at the White House on Monday.
The Kansas City Chiefs won the Super Bowl LVII in February, beating the Philadelphia Eagles. The first championship they won was in Super Bowl LIV.
The president acknowledged the team’s representation outside of football for “speaking out for racial justice, honoring veterans” and “supporting tutors and mentors for local schools.”
“You’re showing the power of one of the most elusive things in the world: Unity,” Biden said about the team.
He also singled out Patrick Mahomes, the Chiefs’ quarterback, praising him and calling him “one of the greatest quarterbacks in his generation.”
Biden also took time to honor the late Norma Hunt, who died Sunday. She was the wife of Kansas City Chiefs founder Lamar Hunt and was the only woman in history to attend every Super Bowl game.
“Jill and I send our condolences to the entire Hunt family, including her son and current CEO of the Chiefs, Clark Hunt,” Biden said.
Never having been to the White House before, Mahomes said his experience was “surreal.”
“[To] see the history of this great nation that we have, it was really cool for me to just be here and be in the moment, and I don’t think I could ever really imagine it being as cool as it was,” Mahomes said.
In early May, Mahomes’ brother, Jackson Mahomes, was arrested and charged with sexual battery and is now facing up to four years in prison for his alleged crimes.
